
Huaraz is the capital of the region of Ancash, in north-central Peru. It is located about 420 kilometers north of the city of Lima, in the valley of Callej?n de Huaylas. It is also considered the most important commercial center of the region.
This region was reached by Spanish conquerors in 1533 but wasn't established as a town until 1574, when Captain Alonso de Santoyo founded the town and named it "San Sebasti?n de Huaraz".
The city is surrounded by many beautiful natural attractions, such as lagoons and of course, the famous Huascar?n, the highest peak in Peru, which is largely visited by adventurers willing to climb its height. Nearby, visitors can find the Huascar?n National Park, a stunning place which was declared a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1985.
